What is Certification Scope?
Certification scope is the statement that describes the “type of activities, products and services as applicable to the organization at each physical site without being misleading or ambiguous”. Some people called it scope of certification, it is actually same meaning with certification scope. This scope will be written on the ISO certification.
Eg. Company A has many business entities – Civil Construction, Electrical engineering, manufacturing of Cement, Trading of construction raw material.
- The organization can decide whether to get ISO certified for all the scope above (Civil Construction, Electrical engineering, manufacturing of Cement, Trading of construction raw material) or choose the scope they prefer to get certified.
- The Certification Body will be based on the applied Certification scope to conduct the ISO audit, to check on the mandatory document, procedure, and implementation records.
- If all the mandatory documents, procedures, and records are managed to prove the company A has complied with the applied certification scope, and ISO Standard then the certification body will recommend company A for the ISO certification approval.
- Once the Certification is approved, the applied certification scope, Name of the company, address of the company will be written on the certificate.
The Certification scope can the extend or reduce anytime when the organization needed.
Eg. Company A above, get ISO 9001 certified for certification scope – Provision of Civil Construction and Electrical Engineering Services in the 1st year. In the following year, they plan to extend their scope to add the manufacturing of cement.
- Company A will need to inform the certification body that they want to extend their certification scope to Provision of Civil Construction, Electrical Engineering Services, and manufacturing of cement.
- The certification body will conduct the surveillance audit and extension scope audit on the new applied Certification scope.
- If all the mandatory documents, procedures, and records are managed to prove the company A has complied with the new applied certification scope, and ISO Standard then the certification body will recommend company A for the new extension certification scope.
- Once the Certification is approved, certification body will issue new certification with the new scope to Company A.
